"Black" Sam Bellamy, known as the Prince of Pirates, was one of the most successful pirates to sail the Caribbean with over fifty prizes taken in the waters around the Virgin Islands. His ultimate (and final) prize was the slaver ship Whydah, which he took without a fight and then had the bad luck of crashing into the rocks of the coast of Cape Cod in 1717 with a hold full of over three million dollars worth of loot. Black Sam and all but seven of his men drowned in the stormy seas.
