Rudyard Kipling, famous for such books as Riki Tiki Tavi, Gunga Din, and the Jungle Book, wrote the poem that became the lyrics to this song in remembrance of his days living in 1066 Country in Southeast England in the late 1800's. The poem was included in his book "Puck of Pook's Hill" released in 1922. Though the poem was call "A Smuggler's Song" then.
Peter Bellamy, Anthea Bellamy, and Chris Birch first recorded this poem as a song in 1972 on an album of songs set to Kipling's poems. The melody was derived from a traditional song called "The White Cockade" that was well known in Kipling's childhood area of Rottingdean, Sussex.
