The song began as a spiritual hymn, with appearances in hymnals as far back as the 1880's, with lyrics more geared towards thwarting the devil. The first appearance of more nautical lyrics to the song came in the Oxford Song Book around 1927. It's easy to assume, though, that shantymen had been giving it seafaring lyrics for many years before that.
