This song, with origins around 1870, refers to a real life captain "Burgess" and ship Davy Crockett. Burgess was the captain of the Crockett from 1863 to 1874 and this song was written by an unknown party soon afterward.
An American sailor, Dick Maitland, was a bosun on the ship the General Knox in 1885 and while on his voyages to England, he learned this song from a Liverpool man.
