This song emerged from the Appalachian mountains around 1900 as a variant of a folk song called the ""Rising Sun Blues"". Though the cities changed based upon era and geography, it eventually settled on New Orleans as the setting because of its reputation as the den of sin in the U.S. The first recorded instance of an establishment called the Rising Sun in New Orleans was a hotel on Conti Street in 1821.
