Journey to Jazzland by : Gia Volterra de Saulnier; Illustrated by Emily Zieroth

Review by: David Ruffin

When I finished Journey to Jazzland I looked back to find where its author, Gia Volterra de Saulnier was based and was surprised to see that she hails from Massachusetts. I fully expected to see a New Orleans address. Somehow I expect to read about the freedom of music in that birthplace of Jazz along the Mississippi. But from whatever port she hails she has captured the soul of expression that comes when the heart flows through the instruments. The tale is a wonderful, uplifting read for those kids who look around and march to a drummer with a more syncopated beat.

Many feel that a book must be pedantic to reach kids or contain some vast message. Yet here is a simple story of friendship and shared dreams. The illustrations are clever bold and the colors are as bright and rich as the music that inspired them. And the book is even interactive in the best way. Hands on fun and the opportunity to add to the combo with other instruments are obvious. The chance for parents to play the music of those adventurous instruments can provide a real moment to share.

If you have a little one that loves music and dancing in the street, pick up a copy and start your own Journey to Jazzland. I see a Second-line coming, y´all.

Thanks! I appreciate this! I'm so glad you liked it!
